The 18th European Athletics Festival “Bydgoszcz Cup” is about to start. There will be very interesting pole vault contest. The best pole vault athletes Pawel Wojciechowski and Piotr Lisek will tackle in Bydgoszcz. Wojciechowski is a gold medalist (Daegu 2011) and silver medalist (Beijing 2015) of the World Championships. Lisek was second in the World Championships in London 2017 and third in Beijing 2015, moreover he is the Indoor European Champion (Belgrade 2017).
- I changed the poles this year. I will use the equipment that Renaud Lavillenie uses. What is more I will test the poles on which Sam Kendricks jumps. I’m glad that I can jump in the front of my local fans. It will be my next start this season, so I hope to reach a good result – says Pawel Wojciechowski.
The 400m races are going to be promising. We will see the gold medalist 4x400m relay Jakub Krzewina, Rafal Omelko, Karol Zalewski, Lukasz Krawczuk and the women 4x400m relay Justyna Swiety-Ersetic, Patrycja Wyciszkiewicz, Malgorzata Holub-Kowalik, Aleksandra Gaworska and the local runner Iga Baumgart (BKS Bydgoszcz).
- This year we have introduced the women shot put and the javelin throw. We have never had this competition in Bydgoszcz. I hope that the fans, who come to the stadium, will be satisfied. In addition, we have prepared an offer for the young pupils. We want to convince them to take their parents or the other family members to the stadium – encourages Krzysztof Wolsztynski, the chairman of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Athletic Association.
In the men’s 800m Marcin Lewandowski will fight with Kenyan Nicholas Kiplangat Kipkoech. Both runners are considered as favorites, so we can expect really fast run with the time about 1:45. On the other side, the women 800m will be also valuable. The clash of Sofia Ennaoui and Angelika Cichocka will bring emotions as well.
Speaking about the technical competition, the supporters will see the young rising-star Marcelina Witek (gold medal at the Universiade, Taipei 2017, silver medal at the European Team Championships, Lille 2017), Klaudia Maruszewska (gold medal at the World U20 Championships, Bydgoszcz 2016) and Latvian Anete Kocina (silver medal at the European U23 Championships, Bydgoszcz 2017).
- I’m very pleased that the European Athletics Festival will take place for the 18th time. As a city, we make every effort to support the organization of the meeting as much as possible. I hope that we will have many athletic events ahead of us. We want to support them proudly – ensures Adam Soroko, the deputy director of the Department of Education and Sport.
Another tough duel will be in the women’s shot put, where the polish champion Paulina Guba will compete with Hungarian Anita Marton, the silver medalist at the World Championships (London 2017) and the gold medalist at the Indoor European Championships (Belgrade 2017).
In the sprints and the hurdles, apart from the leading polish competitors (Damian Czykier, Artur Noga, Dominik Bochenek, Karolina Kołeczek, Klaudia Siciarz, Remigiusz Olszewski), we will also see the representatives of Jamaica and the United States, including Barbara Pierre, who won 100m a year ago.
